In our society, silence is awkward becuase we are so used to moving so fast and always having something going on around us that silience is unusual and we don't know how to act in a situation of silence. Theres always a need to fill the silence with words or actions. Everyone experiences awkward silences, when a teacher is frustrated with their class they yell, and after they yell there is always the awkward silence before they can get back to their lesson. People talk not always because they have something important to say, they talk because it is silent and they want to fill the silence in with words. It affects us as listeners beacuse we are so used to people talking that we don't always pay attention to what they are saying. When someone says something that is important and worth hearing, we don't realize it becuase we are used to the constant sound of people talking and we are unable to distinguish important things from the unimportant.

Who am i?
Hi! I'm Jenny Anderson and I am a junior in Sal's first period class. At school, I am involved in Give, Student Embassador, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Student Council. I am not always the most outgoing, but when I have something to say I speak my mind. I love meeting new people and building relationships with them. Freshman year I was on cheer leading at school and I couldn't imagine what my life would be like without it because, although I no longer cheer, I met one of my best friends from cheer. She is one of the biggest influences on my life and I always turn to her when I need advice. My family also has a huge influence on my life. I'm extremely close with my parents and they are there for me no matter what. My brother also has influenced me becuase, although we aren't as close as I'd like us to be, he is always there for me to talk to or have a good laugh with. I enjoy myself the most when I'm with my friends and I would do anything for them. Music plays a big role in my life because whenever I'm in a bad mood or stressed about something, music helps me relax.
Highschool has made me into the person I am. Over the 3 years, I've learned so much from my friends, my teachers, and my mistakes. Also, this summer I went to Hawaii for a month to do community service work. The 80 hours of service we did changed me. It gave me a different perspective on life. I realized that people need help and it's my job to help them. I got the oportunity to build a house for Habitat for Humanity. The family whose house we were building was also there helping to build their house. Hearing their story and why they needed their help gave me a better understanding of how people get into these less fortunate situations and gave me a better idea of how I could help them. We also went to the Ronald Mcdonald house to help sick kids and their families. We cleaned the rooms to make sure there so no chance of the kids getting more sick, we made meals for the families, we ate with the families, and we played with the sick children. The couldn't do anything about the situation they were in, but from us being there, it put a big smile on their faces and it momentarily stopped their worries. It also put a smile on my face to know that I was able to help someone who needed it out and I will remember this experience throughout my life time.
After highschool, my goal is to go to college, I don't know where, but I know that I want to work with kids. I work at a childcare center in a fitness club and I love interacting and learning more about the kids each day. I took sociology becuase I want to learn more about the way people think and why they do things. Hopefully, after this class I will be able to look at things in a different light and understand the way people think.
